After Root Canal  Changing Your View Of Root Canals

The time after root canal treatment is completed is very important and can be very confusing. I’ve been doing root canals for over 20 years and have been asked many questions by patients about root canals. The answers to these questions usually lead to less anxiety before, during, and after root canal treatment is completed.

After Root Canal - Pain?

Post root canal pain can lead to panic. I’ve heard many patients say, “I thought the tooth nerve was removed so how can my tooth hurt?”

The pain after a root canal treatment is usually coming from the ligament, bone, and gum surrounding the tooth. This tissue can become inflamed during the procedure and may take a couple of days to resolve.

If you have pain after root canal treatment has been completed it doesn’t mean the tooth wasn’t treated properly. This pain will typically resolve in a couple of days.

After Root Canal – Do’s and Don’ts.

  • Do let your dentist know you are in pain.
  • Do try to rest for the remainder of the day after treatment.
  • Do follow your dentist’s instructions.
  • Don’t use heat or ice unless your dentist gives these specific instructions.
  • Don’t chew hard foods on your tooth for a couple of days.

After Root Canal - Crown?

Yes, if you have a root canal treatment on a back tooth your dentist will probably recommend you have a crown placed. This will help prevent the tooth from developing a fracture in the future. For front teeth you may not need a crown after your root canal.

After Root Canal – Retreatment?

95% of root canal treatments are successful but the other 5% will need further treatment. Some of those 5% will need to be extracted. However, sometimes the root canal can be done a second time in order to try and save the tooth.

A retreatment is very similar to the initial root canal treatment except the existing root canal filling must first be removed. The canal or canals are cleaned and filled again. This procedure may cost a little more than the initial root canal.

As a root canal specialist I’ve heard many questions asked by patients through the years. Some of these are asked after root canal treatment has been completed. One of the questions that is being asked more frequently due to the internet is, “Are root canals controversial?”

If you read about root canals on the internet you may be too afraid to even consider saving your tooth. In fact, many people opt for tooth removal before they even understand what a root canal really is.

That’s why I wrote The Relaxed Root Canal.  In this book I answer over 80 of the most commonly asked questions about root canals. I even tell you the one thing you should not place on your jaw after your tooth has been treated.
