When a tooth needs a root canal it is because the dental pulp is either inflamed or infected. The pulp is the soft tissue on the inside of the tooth. It contains nerve tissue and small blood vessels. Once this tissue becomes infected or badly inflamed it must be removed.

To remove the diseased pulp a small opening is made in the tooth. Special root canal instruments are used to
clean the diseased tissue and create a space for a root canal filling. Once this filling is placed the root is sealed and 95% of the time there will be no further problems with the tooth.

After the root canal treatment has been completed the top part of your tooth will need a permanent restoration.
If you had a molar root canal you will most likely need a crown on the tooth. This will help protect your tooth from a fracture in the future.
