Pain In Tooth            Changing Your View Of Root Canals

If you have a pain in tooth and jaw you need to see your dentist as soon as possible. It isn't wise to try on your own to get rid of tooth pain. Home remedies will not provide permanent relief and could result in more serious problems.

Sometimes what feels like tooth pain is something that is not even dental-related such as:

  •  sinus infection
  •  TMJ syndrome
  •  Angina or heart attack

Never try to diagnose and treat what you think is a pain in tooth and jaw. Seek professional dental care first.

Of course most severe toothaches are caused from a bad tooth. This is usually the result of an inflamed or infected dental pulp. The pulp is commonly referred to as the tooth nerve but it is really more than a nerve. The pulp
is a combination of:

  • nerve tissue
  • blood vessels
  • lymphatic vessels
  • specialized cells

These specialized cells are responsible for building the hard structures (enamel, dentin, cementum) of your tooth.
Once it has completed this task the pulp has no vital function within your tooth.

A problem in the pulp occurs when you have tooth decay, a dental filling, a crack in your tooth, or trauma to your tooth. The pulp then becomes inflamed and can cause pain in tooth and the surrounding bone and gums.

In my 20+ years as an endodontist (root canal specialist) I've been asked many times, "Why can't I just take
antibiotics to get rid of tooth pain?" Home remedies including taking any oral medications just simply will not
provide a permanent solution for pain that is coming from your tooth nerve or dental pulp.

The reason is that the dental pulp is a very small amount of tissue trapped inside a hard tooth. There isn't sufficient blood supply to carry antibiotics into the pulp in order to adequately treat it.

Once this pulp tissue has become severely inflamed or infected it can cause pain in tooth, jaw, gums, and even
your ear. To permanently get rid of this tooth pain you must remove the dental pulp. There are only two treatment options that accomplish this:

1. Tooth removal. Sometimes people choose this because they think this is the quickest and cheapest way to get rid of pain in tooth, jaw, and gums. What they fail to realize is that when a tooth is missing the adjacent
and opposing teeth begin to shift and that causes a problem. The way to eliminate this is by replacing the missing tooth with a dental implant or bridge. These can actually be more expensive and time-consuming than saving the tooth.

2. Root canal treatment. These may not be the words you wanted to hear but this is the best way to get rid of pain in tooth, jaw, gums, and ear if your dentist thinks it is necessary. You're probably concerned about:

  •  root canal cost
  •  do root canals hurt?
  •  are root canals successful?

These are among the 80+ questions I answer in The Relaxed Root Canal. I wrote this book to help people learn about root canals and have a relaxing root canal experience.

In Chapter 10 I tell you the on thing not to do in order to get rid of your tooth pain. Home remedies such as this one can cause your pain to get worse.

In Chapter 5 I give you THE ONE QUESTION YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR DENTIST BEFORE YOU HAVE YOUR ROOT CANAL.

You simply must get a YES answer to this question. I'll give you my recommendation on what to do if you get a NO answer.
