Root Canal Cost
The root canal cost contributes to a great deal of the
stress and anxiety related to having a root canal
treatment.
Of course, even if the price for root canal therapy was $10,
the words “you need a root canal” would provoke considerable
apprehension. (That’s why I wrote The Relaxed Root Canal.
Root canal prices, like the prices of other medical
procedures, are constantly increasing. Yet people still want to
know if the cheap root
canal is a
possibility.

Over my 20+ years of
performing root
canal treatments I’ve
yet to hear
anyone say they found a
good,
cheap root canal.
|
Root canal prices have increased and the trend doesn’t look
different for the future.
There are reasons for this root canal cost increase over the
years. Knowing these reasons probably won’t make you feel any
better about having your root canal.
You probably will still think root canal prices are
excessive. But I think it will be helpful to understand these
reasons.
Root Canal Cost - The Reasons
1. Cost of education. You would
probably be shocked if you knew the investment your dentist
made just to become a dentist. After four years of college and
four years of dental school there are often considerable school
loans to be repaid. The cost of all education is rising rapidly
and dental education is no exception.
2. Cost of business. Every business
person will tell you that the cost of running a business is
always increasing. A dental office is a small business that
feels this even more than most other small businesses. Consider
that in order to keep a dental office open your dentist has
these expenses:
- office space rent or mortgage
- utilities
- salary and benefits for employees
- dental equipment
- dental supplies
These are only a few of the expenses a dentist is
responsible for each month. I know this doesn’t make you feel
better about your root canal cost being so high but it is
something to think about.
3. Cost of research. “What does
research have to do with the price for root canal treatment I
will have to pay tomorrow?” That’s a good
question.
The fact is that dentistry is making significant advances in
all areas of treatment. This is especially true in the field of
root canal treatments.
These research and development costs ultimately get passed
on to your dentist in the form of higher equipment and supply
costs.
4. Cost of supplies. The root canal
cost you will pay might seem really excessive when you realize
that you leave the dental office and can’t “see” a thing you
just paid for.
All of the work the dentist performed is below the gum line
and not visible to anyone.
Yet, you need to know that your dentist used some very
sophisticated and costly instruments and dental materials in
order to save your tooth.
The costs of these are constantly increasing which makes
root canal prices climb even higher.
5. Cost of equipment. All medical
equipment costs continue to rise. You probably wouldn’t believe
how much your dentist had to pay for that comfortable chair you
sit in for treatment.
I know that all of these reasons don’t make it easier to
reach into your wallet to pay for a root canal but these really
do need to be considered.
But you probably came here looking for numbers such as $400
or $1000. You want to know how much is the price for root canal
treatment. Here’s what you need to know: it is extremely
variable.
Root Canal Cost - The Variables
Where you live will be a factor in root canal prices. This
is true for practically all goods and services. Root canals are
no exception. If you live in Singapore the cost will be
different than if you live in Australia. The cost of a New York
City root canal will be different than a Macon, Georgia root
canal.
You will find variation from dentist to dentist. You can
find considerable differences between two dentists in the same
city.
Your tooth will also determine the cost. Front teeth
typically cost more than back teeth. There also may be
complications involved with your tooth that will increase the
root canal cost. Typically root canal retreatment costs more as
well.
Your tooth will require a crown or other restoration AFTER
the root canal treatment has been completed.
A final word about your root canal cost.
The cheap root canal might not be the cheapest in the long
run. Don’t go to a dentist with whom you are not familiar just
to get a cheap root canal.
I’m not saying that the dentist with the cheap root canal
fee won’t do a good job. But, you need to ask around to be
sure.
