Root Canal Treatment  Changing Your View Of Root Canals

Root canal treatment is used to save millions of teeth each year. Here are some fast facts about this very commonly performed dental procedure:

7 Fast Facts About Root Canals

#1 Root canal treatment has improved tremendously in recent years.

Most of the fear and anxiety about having a root canal treatment is based on how it was performed many years ago. There was a time when it was a very unpleasant experience. Here are some of the improvements:

  • Better anesthetics. Dentists are now able to get your tooth extremely numb for a painless experience.
  • Better instruments. Space-age technology has resulted in materials such as nickel-titanium that have revolutionized this dental procedure.
  • Better training. There is extensive training for dentists in root canal treatment today. Both in dental school and after graduation, dentists are able to perfect how they perform root canals.

#2 Root canal treatment is performed more quickly today.

That's a big relief if you had one of those 4 long appointment root canals many years ago. The procedure is faster and much smoother than the old days of root canals.

There are still those few teeth that require longer or additional appointments. But many teeth today are able to be completed in a fraction of the time that it took in the past. Some root canals can be completed in a single visit while others may require two visits. It is rare that more than two appointments will be required.

#3 Root canal treatment is not “taking the root out.”

I’ve been asked this one many, many times in my 20+ years of performing root canals. Most people have a serious misunderstanding of this dental procedure. A root canal leaves your root right where it is. This is not a surgical procedure.

#4 You don’t have to be put to sleep for root canal therapy.

Many people are astonished that their root canal will be performed with only the administration of local anesthetic. It is much more like getting a filling than it is getting a  tooth removed.

#5 There is minimal discomfort after a root canal treatment.

Mild discomfort is to be expected. This can usually be controlled with mild analgesics. Your dentist may prescribe stronger analgesics if needed.

#6 Root canal treatment is very successful.

Studies have shown the success rate of root canals to approach 95%. This is an extremely high number for a medical procedure.

#7 Root canals still provoke much anxiety.

Even with all the advancements in this commonly performed dental procedure, it still maintains a high degree of notoriety. This is really unfortunate and causes some people to opt for tooth removal.

That’s why I wrote The Relaxed Root Canal . In this book I dispel the myths about root canals. I answer over 80 questions that clear up so much of the misunderstanding and confusion about root canal therapy.

In Chapter 5 of The Relaxed Root Canal  I answer the question, “Who should do my root canal?”

I’ll give you the one question you should ask your dentist before having a root canal treatment. You should get a yes answer to this question.

I'll also give you my recommendation for what to do if you get a no answer.
