Severe Toothache  Changing Your View Of Root Canals

A severe toothache requires immediate attention. Most people simply cannot endure toothache pain for any significant length of time. A toothache remedy is usually sought very quickly after the onset of pain.

Why does a severe toothache hurt so badly?

It really is hard to believe that a little tooth can cause such intense pain. Toothache pain comes from one of two areas in or around your tooth. Sometimes both areas are involved.

1. Dental pulp. This is the soft tissue on the inside of your tooth. It contains nerve tissue and blood vessels. It is a very important tissue in that it builds your tooth when you are a child. It doesn't have a function once the tooth has completed its development. However if you have deep tooth decay, a cracked tooth, trauma to the tooth, or a dental procedure it can become inflamed.

This inflammation can cause a severe toothache because there is no space for it to swell as the inflammation worsens. In this case you will need a root canal treatment. Your dentist may perform a pulpotomy as an emergency measure as a quick toothache remedy. In this case the root canal will need to be completed at a later date. Basically a pulpotomy is the initial step of a root canal treatment and usually brings quick toothache pain relief.

2. Periapcial tissues. This is the tissue at the very tip of your tooth's roots. Once the dental pulp becomes infected this tissue will become affected. This is called an abscessed tooth. When you have an abscessed tooth this tissue becomes inflamed and infected. This tissue also has nerve tissue and blood vessels. There is a little more space for swelling but not much. Eventually the gum overlying this area might get swollen.

A severe toothache can develop from this inflamed and infected tissue.

What can be done about a severe toothache?

If the pain is due to an inflamed or infected dental pulp this diseased tissue must be removed in one of two ways.

First, you could have the tooth removed. This will take care of your severe toothache problem but it will create other problems. When you are missing a tooth it could effect your bite, appearance, or the position of other teeth.

Second, you could have a root canal treatment. This is a toothache remedy that allows you to save your tooth. This is  simple and common dental procedure. Each year millions of teeth are saved with root canals. Even if you have a severe toothache you should strongly consider saving your tooth with a root canal.

I know that you've probably heard all kinds of stories about root canals. There is much confusion and anxiety associated with having one. That's why I wrote The Relaxed Root Canal.
