Tooth Ache
Remedy Changing Your
View Of Root Canals
Looking for a tooth ache remedy ? You can
find many products that promise toothache relief in the form of
a pill
or liquid. But is there a tooth ache home remedy that will
really take care of your bad tooth?
There are some effective temporary
measures. But probably an over the counter analgesic will be
just as effective as any tooth ache home remedy. Some of the
liquids you rub on your gums may make your bad tooth feel
better for a short while. But the pain always comes back so it
isn't a true tooth ache remedy.
In my 20+ years as an endodontist (root canal specialist)
I've seen many people get confused about this. They wonder how
they can take medicine for pain of other body parts but not a
tooth.
To begin with it is important to understand the source
of most tooth pain. Most people who seek toothache
relief have dental pain originating from the dental pulp. This
is the soft tissue on the inside of the tooth.
This pulp tissue is what is commonly called the "nerve of
the tooth." It does contain nerve tissue but it also contains
tiny blood vessels and specialized cells. These specialized
cells are the ones that build the hard tissues of your tooth
when you are a child. As an adult the tooth pulp has no vital
function in maintaining your tooth.
The fact that the dental pulp is a small amount of tissue
contained within the hard structures of your tooth is what
makes a tooth ache remedy so
challenging. It is very difficult to get any oral
or topical medication into the pulp.
You may have taken some antibiotics and strong analgesics
for a bad tooth in the past. You got toothache relief and
thought that your tooth had healed.
These medications actually brought relief from pain that was
coming from the tissues surrounding your tooth. They did
nothing to eliminate the source of pain. Here's how it
works:
A diseased pulp will eventually cause inflammation and
infection of the bone, ligament, and gum tissue around your
tooth. These areas have a great deal of blood supply which
allows oral medications to be effective in bringing pain relief
after you take them.
The only problem is that as long as the diseased pulp
remains in the tooth your bad tooth will cause you problems.
This means that a real tooth ache remedy will have
to eliminate the diseased pulp from the
tooth.
Tooth Ache Remedy: Only 2 Options for Diseased
Pulp
1. Tooth removal. Removing the
tooth will certainly removed the diseased pulp from your bad
tooth and bring you toothache relief.
As a root canal specialist, I only advise you doing this if
the tooth cannot be saved. Tooth removal seems like the easy
option on the day you want toothache relief.
However, it creates problems in the future as your teeth
shift to fill in the space left after tooth extraction. You
will likely spend more time and money replacing a missing
tooth.
2. Root canal therapy. This
is the best tooth ache remedy for toothache relief and saving
your tooth. As a root canal specialist I've performed thousands
of root canals and many times the patient had a very bad
toothache.
The root canal got rid of the toothache and the next
day the patient saved their tooth. So, if your bad tooth can be
saved I recommend saving it.
But I also know that the words, "root canal", are dreaded by
everyone. Nobody wants a root canal. Some people are even so
nervous about having a root canal that they choose tooth
removal.
That's why I wrote The Relaxed Root
Canal. I believe it is very possible for you to
have a relaxing experience when getting a root canal. I
include some practical tips on how to do this in the
book.
I also give you the one home tooth
ache remedy YOU SHOULD NOT TRY. I've seen many
patients through the years who have tried this and it always
makes the pain and swelling worse.
You also want to be sure that you are receiving a high
quality root canal treatment. In Chapter 5 I discuss the
ONE QUESTION YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR
DENTIST BEFORE HAVING YOUR ROOT
CANAL.
You must get a YES answer to this question. I'll tell you
what I think you should do if you get a NO answer!
