Tooth
Removal Changing
Your View Of Root Canals
Tooth removal is always an option when you have a bad tooth.
But there are questions you need to consider:
- Is it the best option?
- Why do people choose this option over a root canal and
crown to save a tooth?
- What problems does it cause when you choose tooth
extraction?
- Are there tooth extraction complications to be
considered?
- Isn't getting a dental implant easier, quicker, and
cheaper?
- Why should you consider saving your tooth with a root
canal?
Let's look at the answers to these important questions.
A Closer Look at Tooth
Removal
Many times tooth removal is chosen over a root canal
treatment because of root canal myths. There is a great deal of
confusion and misunderstanding surrounding root canals.
You've probably heard the expression, "I'd rather (fill in
the blank) than have a root canal." This implies that having a
root canal is one of the worst things you can do. But is this
really true?

One of the tooth extraction
complications people don't often consider is
the time and money it will take to replace a
missing tooth.

I've performed thousands of root canals in my 20+ years as
an endodontist. I've seen many people change their mind about
having their bad tooth removed after they understood the root
canal procedure.
One of the common misconceptions about root canals is that
it is a surgical procedure that involves removing the root of a
tooth.
Roots are not
removed when root canals are performed.
Root canals are performed in order to remove a diseased
dental pulp. The pulp is soft tissue on the
inside of your tooth containing blood, nerve, and lymph.
It also contains cells that are responsible for making the
hard tissues of your teeth. This all takes place when you are a
child. As an adult the pulp tissue has no vital function in the
maintenance of your tooth.
When this tissue becomes diseased it must be removed. There
are only two options that accomplish this:
- tooth removal
- root canals
A root canal involves making a small opening in your tooth.
Small root canal instruments are placed through this small
opening in order to clean out the diseased pulp.
The space that is created by these small instruments is then
filled with a root canal filling material such as gutta percha
or Resilon.

This procedure can turn a bad
tooth into a tooth that can be saved and
function for the rest of your life.

The dental implant has become very popular in recent years.
The dental implant technique has greatly improved and it is now
a very successful procedure.
But there are some things you must consider regarding the
dental implant:
-
involves tooth
removal
- there can be tooth
extraction complications
- the dental implant procedure
takes multiple
visits
- the dental implant is usually not an
inexpensive option
- the interface between the dental implant
and the gum must be kept very
clean
Certainly the implant is a much better option than it was
years ago. But there really is nothing better
than your natural tooth.
So, even if you have a bad tooth you should consider saving
it with a root canal. Millions of root canals are performed
around the world each year with a very high success rate.
Of course we haven't talked about your nervousness regarding
root canals. The root canal procedure can evoke strong feelings
of anxiety.
That's why I wrote The Relaxed Root Canal.
