Tooth Pain Relief Changing Your View Of Root Canals

Tooth pain relief when you have an abscessed tooth can’t come fast enough. There really is no pain quite like tooth pain and toothache relief is not easy to accomplish.

There are several possible causes for a severe toothache:

  • Deep tooth decay. When you have a large amount of dental decay in a tooth there will be a great deal of bacteria. These bacteria infiltrate the dental pulp causing inflammation of this tissue. An inflamed dental pulp results in tooth pain. Relief comes from either a deep filling being placed or root canal treatment.
  • Prior filling or crown. When you have a filling or crown done on a tooth it causes inflammation of the dental pulp. It may take years to develop into an abscess that causes tooth pain. Relief will again be obtained by removal of the pulp.
  • Abscessed tooth. In this case the dental pulp has gone past being inflamed and is now infected. This can cause the surrounding bone and gum tissue to become infected and painful. In this case there may actually be pus present around the tooth. It will feel like a severe toothache but actually the pain is coming from the bone around the tooth.
  • Trauma. You can traumatize a tooth by biting on something hard or bumping it in an accident. This can lead to an inflamed pulp or an abscessed tooth. In either case the pulp will have to be removed for tooth pain relief.

As you can see, a root canal is the treatment of choice in many cases of tooth pain. If the pain is coming from an inflamed or infected pulp you essentially only have two options: root canal therapy or extraction of the tooth.

The source of tooth pain is often bacteria trapped inside the tooth. These must be cleaned out if there is to be tooth pain relief. The only way to save your tooth in this situation is to have a root canal treatment performed.

Your dentist may also prescribe pain medications and sometimes antibiotics in order to help relieve your pain. But without either a root canal or extraction the pain will return.

Through the years I’ve been asked about natural or at-home toothache remedies. All I can tell you is that if you have a severely inflamed or infected dental pulp it needs to be cleaned out. This space then needs to be filled with a root canal treatment. This is the only permanent solution that also saves your tooth.

Unfortunately, root canals still evoke a great deal of fear and anxiety.  I’ve performed thousands of root canals over a 20+ year period and I understand this very well.

That’s why I wrote the short book, The Relaxed Root Canal.

In this book I answer more than 80 of the most commonly asked questions about root canals.

I also tell you the one thing you should not do if you have a toothache. It’s one of the common at-home toothache remedies that many people try before going to the dentist.

It actually causes more pain and swelling instead of less.
