Toothache After Filling
Changing Your
View Of Root Canals
A toothache after filling of your tooth is
not a good sign. It can be alarming to have a tooth that wasn't
hurting at all become quite painful after a dental
procedure.
In my 20+ years as an endodontist (root canal specialist)
I've seen many people experience severe tooth pain following
the placement of a routine silver filling. Tooth pain such as
this is due to an inflamed pulp.
The dental pulp is the soft tissue found beneath the hard
enamel and dentin of your tooth. This tissue is composed of
nerve tissue as well as blood vessels. It functions to build
your tooth for you when you are a child. As an adult the
dental pulp has no vital function in maintaining your
tooth.
So how can you develop a toothache after
filling of your tooth when it wasn't hurting before?
The process of placing a silver filling, tooth-colored filling,
or crown on your tooth causes this pulp tissue to become
inflamed.
There are basically two types of pulp inflammation:
1. Reversible inflammation.
In this instance the pulp will return to its normal and healthy
condition. With reversible inflammation you might have a slight
toothache after filling of your tooth but it resolves quickly.
You might notice a sensitivity to hot and cold for a couple of
days but it gradually gets better and goes away.
2. Irreversible
inflammation. With this you have tooth pain
and possibly even a dental emergency. The pulp will not heal
and return to its normal and healthy condition. Eventually this
inflammation destroys the pulp and causes what is commonly
referred to as an abscessed tooth.
You might possibly have a constant and
throbbing pain. This is a root canal symptom. This
kind of pain may wake you up at night. It is possible that you
had a large silver filling in a tooth and decided to have a
white crown placed. The crown procedure can cause irreversible
inflammation and tooth pain such as this.
Or your toothache after filling of your tooth may be in the
form of severe and prolonged sensitivity to hot and/or
cold. This is another root canal symptom. The inflamed
pulp must be removed in order to alleviate this temperature
sensitivity.
Pain on biting is another kind of toothache
after filling of your tooth. In this case the inflamed pulp has
progressed significantly toward being an abscessed tooth.
The procedure for treating the diseased dental pulp is a
root canal. The words, "you need a root canal" evoke strong
emotions. The anxiety associated with having a root canal can
be so intense that some people just have their tooth
removed.
