Toothache Pain
Relief Changing Your View Of Root
Canals
Toothache pain relief is essential when you
have a diseased tooth pulp. The dental pulp is the soft tissue
on the inside of your tooth. This tissue contains nerve tissue
and blood supply.
The tooth pulp is very important when you are a child and
your tooth is developing. When tooth injury occurs during
childhood the tooth may never complete its development.
A tooth injury can cause a child to need toothache pain
relief just like deep tooth decay. These teeth can still be
saved sometimes through complex root canal therapy known as
apexification.
Once the tooth has completely developed the tooth pulp can
become inflamed or infected. This means you may need toothache
pain relief very quickly. Not every sensitive tooth is a dental
emergency. We are talking about the severe toothache; the kind
that wakes you up at night.
What causes the tooth pulp to become so diseased
that it produces such a severe toothache?
- A deep dental cavity. When you have
tooth decay that gets close to the tooth pulp you can have
a severe toothache. The bacteria from the decay infiltrates
the pulp tissue and causes inflammation.
- A dental restoration. If you have a
filling or a crown on a tooth the pulp can become inflamed
and painful. Sometimes this happens soon after the
restoration is placed. Other times it takes years to
develop into a painful or sensitive tooth requiring
toothache pain relief.
- Tooth injury. If you bump your tooth in
an accident the tooth pulp can get injured and eventually
become painful.
- Cracked tooth. A cracked tooth can
eventually require toothache pain relief. Some cracks are
shallow and the remedy may just be a filling or crown.
Severe cracks, however, will require more extensive
treatment.
What can be done to bring toothache pain
relief? You've probably heard of many
home remedies for toothache
pain. Many are harmless.
There is one you should absolutely
not try. I discuss this one in
Chapters 10 & 11 of The Relaxed Root
Canal.
Probably none of the home remedies for a severe toothache
from the tooth pulp are any more effective than over the
counter analgesics.
If you just have a sensitive tooth you might need something
as simple as a small filling. But if you have a severe
toothache from an inflamed or infected tooth pulp you will only
have two options:
extraction of the tooth or root canal therapy.
I know you were hoping to read of toothache pain relief that
comes in a magical pill or liquid. Sorry, but it doesn't exist.
Here's why.
Once the tooth pulp becomes inflamed or infected and causes
a toothache there is but one toothache cure. The pulp must be
removed! This can only be accomplished with tooth removal or
root canal therapy.
In my 20+ years as an endodontist (root canal
specialist) I've had many patients try to
convince me that all they needed was an antibiotic. You may get
some temporary toothache pain relief from antibiotics and pain
medications. But I promise you that your toothache will return
if the tooth pulp is not removed.
Hearing that you need root canal therapy is always unwelcome
news. There is actually a great deal of
confusion about what a root canal
really is.
That's one of the reasons I wrote The Relaxed Root
Canal. In this digital book I answer over
80 questions I've
heard through my years of performing thousands of root
canals.
In Chapter 5 I tell
you the ONE QUESTION YOU SHOULD ASK BEFORE YOUR ROOT CANAL.
I'll even
recommend what you should do if you get the wrong answer from
your dentist.
