Toothache Remedy

Changing Your View Of Root Canals

I saw a toothache remedy on the internet recently that made me chuckle. It was called the best remedy for toothaches on the internet. You can certainly find many toothache remedies and some of them may actually provide some temporary pain relief.

But the best remedy for toothache pain is a root canal. I know you probably wanted to hear anything but that. There simply isn't a permanent remedy for toothaches to be found in a bottle. I hope this explanation will help you better understand and choose the best remedy for toothaches.

Most people get nervous at the mention of the words root canal. As an endodontist (root canal specialist) I've seen some patients who have tried an alternative toothache remedy before seeing a dentist. There are a few reasons this is not recommended:

You might not need a toothache remedy.

Some people are shocked to find out that the source of their pain is not a tooth. Many years ago my dad insisted that a dentist remove an upper molar that was causing him severe pain. After the anesthetic wore off my dad still had his pain. The reason: his pain was coming from a sinus infection.

TMJ syndrome which is an inflammation of the joint in front of your ears can also feel just like a toothache.

Angina and heart attack can also cause jaw pain. So, it is very important to see your dentist ASAP when you have what feels like a toothache.

You may try a home toothache remedy that makes your situation worse.

One of the common ones I've seen is aspirin burn. This occurs when someone places an aspirin on the gum beside their tooth. This can cause a severe and painful burn of this soft tissue.

There's another one that I write about in Chapter 10 of The Relaxed Root Canal. This is a popular home remedy for toothaches that always makes pain and swelling worse. For more information CLICK HERE.

Using a homemade toothache remedy delays needed treatment for your tooth.

Most dental procedures are best done sooner rather than later. Sometimes delaying your treatment may cause you to lose your tooth. Other times the delay might cause the infection to become worse and take longer to heal.

Why isn't there a better toothache remedy for abscessed tooth pain than a root canal?

The answer to this question lies in the location of the source of toothache pain. If you have an abscessed tooth you have a diseased dental pulp. The pulp is the soft tissue that lies on the inside of your tooth beneath the enamel and dentin.

Because the pulp is encased within the enamel and dentin, no topical remedy for toothaches will provide a permanent solution. Even medications taken orally will not be effective since they will not be able to reach the diseased pulp in sufficient quantities.

The bottom line is that the diseased pulp tissue must be removed from the abscessed tooth. There are only two treatment options that accomplish this goal:

  • Tooth extraction
  • Root canal procedure

The best remedy for toothache pain is the root canal procedure. Here's why:

  • You get to keep your tooth.
  • It is a simple, non-surgical procedure.
  • There are few complications with a root canal.

The biggest problem with a root canal as the preferred toothache remedy is its bad reputation. The stories, myths, and misunderstandings have created much  nervousness about having a root canal.

I've heard many questions and concerns about root canals in my 20+ years as an endodontist (root canal specialist).

I wrote The Relaxed Root Canal to answer these questions ( more than 80 of them) and to give practical tips on how to have a relaxing root canal appointment.

In chapter five I discuss the ONE QUESTION YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR DENTIST BEFORE YOU HAVE YOUR ROOT CANAL.

You simply must get a Yes answer to this question. I'll give you my recommendation on what to do if you get a NO answer.
