Toothache Treatment   Changing Your View Of Root Canals

The ideal toothache treatment should be:

  •  painless
  •  cost effective
  •  successful
  •  time efficient
  •  safe

This describes endodontic therapy which is more commonly known as root canal treatment. I know you've heard bad things about root canals but give me a chance to persuade you that it really is the best option when considering the best toothache treatment.

First of all we need to talk about your toothache. There are several things that can cause a toothache. This includes some serious medical conditions such as angina and heart attack.

But the most common cause is a diseased dental pulp found on the inside of the tooth. The pulp may become inflamed as a result of tooth decay, dental procedures, or any kind of trauma to the tooth.

This inflammation can become bad enough that the pulp will not be able to recover to its healthy state. It may become so painful during this time that toothache treatment is sought.

This inflammation will eventually cause a necrotic (dead) pulp. We then call it an abscessed tooth.

In either case this diseased pulp must be removed. There are only two options that accomplish this: tooth removal and endodontic therapy (root canal).

Some people choose tooth removal because they think it is quicker, less painful, and cheaper. They might even believe that an abscessed tooth cannot be successfully saved and retained for the remainder of their life.

The reality is that tooth removal can actually take more time and money in the long run. If you have a tooth removed you need to replace it as soon as possible. This can take multiple visits to your dentist and result in a greater expense than a root canal and crown.

As far as the pain of each procedure there should be virtually none. Your dentist will get the tooth numb for either tooth removal or endodontic therapy. However, a root canal treatment results in less pain the next day than tooth removal.

Let's look at why endodontic therapy is the best toothache treatment:

  • Painless. Local anesthetics used in dentistry have greatly improved through the years. Your dentist will be able to get your tooth numb for the procedure. There is no reason that you should have a long and painful appointment for your root canal.
  • Cost effective. The fee for a root canal crown combination seems steep on the day of treatment. However, if you look at this as an investment over the length of your life it seems much more reasonable. Our teeth are very important for our overall general health. It is a good investment in the long term to save your teeth. Additionally, it is more
cost effective to have a root canal crown combination than to replace an extracted tooth.
  • Successful. This toothache treatment is not only successful at eliminating your pain but it is successful at saving your tooth. Endodontic therapy has a 95% success rate. This is very high for any medical procedure.
  • Time efficient. Some people say they just want to have the tooth removed and get an implant. They believe this will save them from a time-consuming  root canal crown combination. But studies have been done that show you will spend much more time in the dental chair for an implant than a root canal.
  • Safe. Endodontic therapy is an extremely safe procedure. It is very much like getting a
filling at your dentist. In Chapter 5 of The Relaxed Root Canal I give you an important question to ask your dentist BEFORE your root canal. A YES answer to this question reveals that the root canal will be performed under the safest conditions.

I even recommend what to if you get a NO answer to this question. I've been an endodontist (root canal specialist) for over 20 years and I believe that it is absolutely essential to get a YES answer to this question.
